Masking is working hard so nobody sees you struggling

Masking is a word many neurodivergent people use for hiding or covering their struggles so they look fine. It is not a medical diagnosis. It is a description of effort.

What it can look like

Many people describe things like these:

  • Rehearsing what to say before a call or a conversation.
  • Preparing far more than anyone else, just to feel safe.
  • Laughing off being late, again, before anyone can be annoyed.
  • Copying how other people behave in a meeting.
  • Holding the fidgeting in until you are alone.

The cost shows up later

Masking can work. People may tell you that you seem fine. The cost comes when you get home and have nothing left. And when nobody can see the effort, nobody offers help.

  • Tell one person the real version of a day that looked fine.
  • Plan recovery after high-effort days. Treat it as part of the work, not a reward.
