Why do I lose things I was holding a minute ago?

As a boy, I lost my things all the time. Whatever I carried that day, I came home without some of it. People called it careless.

The moment may never have been stored

Here is one common way to explain it. You put something down while your mind is on something else. Your brain never files the moment of putting it down. So the keys are not lost. The memory of placing them was never made.

Many people with ADHD describe this. Researchers link ADHD with differences in attention and working memory, which helps to explain why it happens so often.

You know the scene. You check the same pocket three times. You walk back to the room and forget why you went there.

Losing things is not a character flaw. It is a gap in what got noticed.

Things to try

Check with your doctor before trying anything that touches medication. These are practical ideas only, and they may not work for you.

  • Give each important thing one landing spot. A hook or bowl by the door beats good intentions.
  • Say it out loud as you put it down. "Keys, on the shelf." It feels silly. It also gives your brain something to store.
  • Add a tracker to the things that cost most to lose. Keys, wallet, the bag you carry every day.
  • Stop apologising for the search. Looking for things is part of the day for many of us. Leave ten extra minutes.

If this sounds like you

If losing things is part of a bigger pattern in your life, talk to a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist. This page explains what the visit involves.
